This book was published as part of Aghalee Parish Heritage Project. It was made possible with the Heritage Fund – thanks to National Lottery players.
Much of the content from the book is already on this website but if you would like a physical copy please contact us.
Soldiers of every era have left their mark on the parish of Aghalee, not least those who gave 'Soldierstown' its name.
Sailors transported their cargoes by barge on the Broadwater and along the Lagan Navigation, which flows through the heart of this parish.
Saints have worshipped God at Holy Trinity church for almost 350 years, and for centuries before that at four ancient local churches.
Spinners of linen are amongst the many who have been involved in local industry throughout the generations.
These are just some of the threads woven into our parish heritage.
It’s difficult, in a limited number of words, to share the full length and breadth of the heritage of Aghalee Parish – which is much longer than the 350-year history of Holy Trinity Church and much broader than Aghalee village or the hamlet of Soldierstown.
The area covered by the present Church of Ireland parish of Aghalee has historically also incorporated the parishes of Magheramesk and Aghagallon (including Maghernagaw); so, we have included this whole area in the scope of this booklet.
By and large, we have adhered to the historical facts as they are known to us (and there is much still to be discovered), but just occasionally, we have not allowed the facts to stand in the way of a good story!
